“Paa” – Its about Maa

Posted by Pankaj on Dec 8, 2009 in Movie Reviews

Do not go by the tv promotions or the tag line of the movie. This movie is all about a mother-son relationship. I missed the first 15-20 mins of the movie. Here is my review on the rest of the movie.

Many of you would have hated the look of amitabh bachchan but it was not the same with me. He has done a great job in Paa. 4hrs to put on the make up and 1 hr to remove it. How much patience can u expect from a 65 yr old actor. He gets into the character as always and does what ever it takes to deliver it be  it voice modulation like a child.

Paa is a story of how a single mother brings up her child who is affected by a disease called progeria (a medical condition that accelerates the ageing process). Vidya (Vidya balan) plays mother of Auro (Amitabh bachchan) who had an affair with Amol arthe (Abishiek bachchan).

Our country needs the new generation politician like Amol arthe. The way he hits back media on land contraversy. The movie is good heart felt movie. Ilayaraja excels as always with a soothie background score. PC sriram is best at what he can do.

The movie is great and i appricieate the fact how indian cinemas has involoved. This movie is far better than the brainless-plotless comedy entertainers. But i’m afraid this movie will not be apprieciated by the masses.

I go 3 out of 5 for this and probably i’ll watch another time just for those first few minutes.

Luck By Chance – Farhan gets lucky again

Posted by Pankaj on Jan 31, 2009 in Movie Reviews

Cast: Farhan Akthar, Konkana Sen Sharma, Rishi kapoor, Dimple kapadia, Juhi Chawala, Sanjay Kapoor, Isha Sharwani, Hrithik roshan, Saurabh shukala, a bunch of superstars as guest appearances.

First a big hand to Zoya akhtar for making a good debut directional movie. Right from the begining of the movie from where the credits star the mood of movie is set in perfect bollywood picture. You meet all people involved in making a movie successfull. Bollywood isn’t that beautiful behind the scenes.

The movie is primarily about farhan and konkana pursuing their dreams of becoming stars of this industry. Movie has a good combination of humour attached with screenplay. It does show a the dark side of bollywood where you become selfish and use your friends & well wishers to climb up the ladder. In this movie you’ll see many familiar faces of bollywood making a guest apperances just to give the movie the perfect scene of making it feel a perfect bollywood. Even thou all have small roles they do it perfectly well to give the audience the taste of bollywood.

There are few emotional scenes like Rishi kapoor breaking down when Stars made by him turn down his phone calls, or the one where dimple kapadia confess to her daughther about her age 16 in bollywood.

Its a simple story with a good screenplay and good star cast. Go watch this movie. Its not that great but still worth watching a different genre of bollywood movies. Would rate it 3 out of 5. So Farhan akthar get lucky again with another hit on his cards.

A lazy blogger …

Posted by Pankaj on Jan 18, 2009 in Movie Reviews

For last 45 days i have watched 7 movies for which i haven’t written the review. Reasons

  • Lazy .. hmmm ??!!!
  • Due to my engagment life !!??
  • Or just like that ..!!

What ever be the reason i thought to just list them out at least and brief up of each movie

1. “The day the earth stood still“- (Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly). A remake of a 1951 super hit movie of the same title. But sad that this could not create that magic again. Movie is about an alien Klaatu [Keanu Reeves] who comes to earth to destroy in order to save it. As humans are killing it by global-warming and nuclear stuffs. But then Klaatu realizes the love and affection between the humans. Movie not that great overall. Watch it if your not feeling sleepy. Would rate it 1 out of 5.

2. “Vaaranam Aayiram” – (Surya, Sameera Reddy, Simran, Ramya). Movie is a beautiful love story with pleasant songs and music. Surya has done a very good job in his acting and worked really hard on his body to the various ages of the character right from 16yr school boy to 66 yr aged old man. There are overall 3 love stories in it. Surya- Simran, Surya-Sameera and Surya-Ramya. Surya plays a double act as a father and son. Son Surya falls in love with Sameera and goes on to pursue his love but then Sameera dies in a accident. Surya goes through a bad times and falls prey to cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. The he finds a new goal in life goes on to become an army man and then accepts the love of his childhood friend ramya. Watch it with your girl friend, lover or wife. They’ll love it. Would rate 3 out of 5. Don’t miss out the songs and music anyways.

3. “Rab ne bana di jodi” – (Shahrukh khan, Anuksha shrama) Boring for non-shahrukh fans. Would Rate it 1 out of 5.

4. “Ghajini” – (Aamir Khan, Asin) – Total remake of the tamil blockbuster ghajini starring Surya and Asin. Except for last 20 mins climax. Movie is not that great when you compare to the tamil movie which itself is not that great when compared to the hollywood original Momento. But still Ghajini in hindi goes on to become one of the super blockbuster hits of bollywood while doing a huge business in the box-office.

5. “Silambattam” – (Silambarasan) . A very bad tamil movie with a super bad script and super bad acting. Not worth for even writing a review. Stay away from cinema talkies where this movie running. Would rate 0 out of 5.

6. “Chandi Chowk to China” – (Akshay kumar, Mithun Chakarbothy, Deepika Padukone) – Akshay tries his best comedy in this but still he falls short of peoples expectaion this time. Might be his lucky lady Katrina not being a part of the movie. Would Rate it 1 out of 5.

The Bucket List – what your wish ?

Posted by Pankaj on Dec 19, 2008 in Movie Reviews

Cast: Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Sean Hayes, Beverly Todd, Rob Morrow

The movie begins on boring note, unsparing glimpse into the unraveling lives of two cancer patients and ends in sentimentality. Along the way, the pair, get to know each other by letting their differences down and go on to become best friends.

Corprate billionaire Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) and working class mechanic Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman) have nothing in common for their illnesses and hospital room. They both share the same room for treatment. As every human has a list of wishes to fulfill  before they die these two old men also had their list. And thats what is called ‘The Bucket List’.

Carter Chambers has a family behind him, a loving wife Virginia, two sons – one lawyer the other engineer and a violinist daughter. Edward Cole owns a lots of hospitals, many wives (divorced) and is in search of his one daughter. And Edward’s hospital policy is no private room for any one. So even during his treatment he has to share the room with another patient and that is how he comes on to meet Carter Chambers.

Carter prepares his bucket list but one he comes to know that there are few chances of him surviving he crushes the paper with his wishes and puts it to the dustbin. Edward takes that and adds up his bucket list and slowly they both get along each other, understand each other and do all things they love to do before they die.

The movie has some beautiful moments like one of the wishes of Edward being to Kiss the most beautiful girl in the world. At the end it turns out to be he is kissing his grand daughter which does leave people emotional.

Both actors have done amazingly well in the movie. The movie is one time worth watching as it does show the values of friendship at any age. And to enjoy your life its never to late just that you’ll have to find a billionaire like Edward to fulfill your Bucket List.

I would rate this movie 3 out of 5. Watch it for some pleasant moments, the journey of old men friendship and a few dialogs like the one by Jack Nicholson “No one cares what you think about”.

Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!

Posted by Pankaj on Dec 4, 2008 in Movie Reviews

Cast: Abhay Deol, Paresh Rawal, Neetu Chandra, Archana Puran Singh, Manu Rishi, Richa Chadda, Anurag Arora, Manjot Singh, Rajinder Sethi

First of all hats off to hindi cinema for coming up with variations in movies. Recent times these small budget movies have fascinated me more than the big banners.

Movie is written very well and execution is also done well. Before watching movie i was expecting good acting from Abhay deol and Paresh rawal. But the movie took me by surprise. Other characters of movie also did extremely well. Especially the one played by Manjot Singh as the teenage lucky. Lots of appreciation to Lucky’s friend called Bangali.

Movie is about how a street crook goes on to become a celebrity. The movie is filled with some good moments which will make you laugh out of your stomach which also might lead to stomach ache. The tricks used by Abhay deol to rob people will surely take you by surprise.

I won’t leak the fun of the movie. Its better for you to go and watch this in theater. Right from the beginning of the movie to end you’ll find good music and background score.

I rate this 3 out of 5 and a must watch if your looking for a different genre of movies and a new class of movies in bollywood.

Quantum of Solace – Not a typical Gadget-Bond movie

Posted by Pankaj on Nov 9, 2008 in Movie Reviews

Cast: Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric

I have seen Bond movies where he has which are ‘out of the world’ gadgets. So my expectations going into this movie were to see how they for-see the technology and implement the gadgets. But i ended up watching an action-thriller movie.

I haven’t watched Casino Royale. And this movie happens to be continuation of that. So it took a few minutes to understand what was happening in the movie. Movie evolves around how Bond tries to get hold of Domnic Greene (Mathieu Amalric) on his some plan.

And it happens to be that all leads that Bond get to reach Domnic are killed by him or someone else and blame ends up on him. Daniel craig according to me is creating all of a different image for Mr.Bond. unlike the flirting one of Pierce Brosman. The best part of the movie is its stunts scenes and chases scenes. They are shot brilliantly.

Its a short movie and once watchable if your keeping track of all bond movies. Go to the movie if you want to see some good stunts and camerawork. I rate this movie 2 out of 5. Don’t miss it if your a 007 fan.

‘Fashion’ low on reality…

Posted by Pankaj on Nov 1, 2008 in Movie Reviews

Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, Mughda Ghodse, Kitu Gidwani, Raj Babbar

Another movie from Madhur Bhandarkar based on reality bites. But this one is trying to make a story out of it rather than having a story in it.

Movie is all about Fashion industry in India. What takes to become a Model and what sacrifices it takes to become a super model. The plot starts with priyanka chopra aspiring to become a super model land ups in the city of dreams MUMBAI against the will of her parents [Raj Babbar] .

Kangana plays a role of another model who is addicted to drugs and the best model of ‘Panache’ – the best modeling agency in the city. Priyanka comes in touch with Arbaaz (Panache’s chairman) in some modeling party.

All of a sudden Priyanka replaces kangana as the new face of ‘Panache’. This leads Kangana more towards drugs and she ends up in a rehabilation center. Priyanka feels at top of the world becoming the super model. During this success journey she starts losing her realtionship with her friends in the industry.

Priyanka has argument with Arbaaz over aborting their child and finally she lands up losing her job which is replaced by some other new face. She also goes into drugs as Kangana and her life starts to ruin.

The last boring and ill-logical half an hour is about how she gains coinfidence makes a comeback as super model.

The movie deals with drugs, gays, sex with bosses and many more. Every second male in the fashion industry is shown as a gay.

Movie could have been much better by cutting short half an hour and with a believable ending. I rate it 2 out of 5. This diwali there is no good dhamaka at screens. Better stay home and spend time with family.

‘Golmaal Returns’ – will soon return from screens

Posted by Pankaj on Oct 30, 2008 in Movie Reviews

Cast: Ajay Devgan, Arshad wasi, Shreyas Talpade, Tushhar kapoor, Kareena kapoor, Amrita arora…

Golmaal returns is supposed to be a comedy entertainer which probably just entertains the actors. Very few jokes are worth laughing. I wonder even if kids would laugh at the rest. The sound which Tushar makes is similar to what Salman and his bro Sohail use to do in their movies [too kiddish to digest].

Thank GOD! The movie isn’t stuffed with many songs. It has a couple of songs and one of them being a spoof of super hit tamil movie ‘Shivaji – The Boss’. Shivaji was better, it at least had glamorous Shreya Sharan.

There is no proper plot to review about. Its all the same cliché found in contemporary movies.

  • 3-5 actors (Multi-Starer)
  • 5 tea spoons of Gay jokes
  • 2 dumb & deaf
  • 1 big confusion bowl
  • half kg of old jokes
  • 2-3 spicy actress

The whole movie was trying to spoof bit and parts of other movies. And commonly used dialog is ‘Shaak … What the F***’ … The movie has nothing special in to watch for. Movie ends up with a hint of part-3 coming up. Sorry! I cannot handle anymore GOLMAAL if its of this sort.

Leave your brains @ home if you have to watch this movie. Its not worth to be a Diwali special. I would rate it @ 1 out of 5 .

“Heroes” – has a few zeros in it …

Posted by Pankaj on Oct 26, 2008 in Movie Reviews

Cast : Salman Khan, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Mithun Chakraborty, Preity Zinta, Sohail Khan, Dino Morea, Vatsal Seth

The movie starts with a 5 min clip of Mohnish behl interviewing 3 soldiers b4 they go into the Kargil war. Where he collects their last letters. All 3 become shaheed in the war and mohnish bhel keeps those letters rather than posting them.

Then after 3 yrs thats when the story begins. The movie is about two friends (Sohail and Vatsal) who have not found the reason of their existence. They are trying to complete their gradation so that they get their visa to America. But their princepal (Tinu verma) tells them to make a small movie for them to get graduated. There is a lot of ill-logical things happening in the movie. You have to bear with those.

So these 2 decide to make a movie on ‘Why you shouldn’t join the indian army’. The good part about sohail khan in the movie is his nick name ‘SAAND’ meaning OX and Vathal seth is called ‘Nawaab’. Both of them come in touch with Mohinsh bhel to get his experience as a war journalist. He gives them those 3 letters and tells them to delvier to those address and make their documentry.

Letter 1 : Balkar singh (Salman khan) to his wife Kuljit (Prity zinta)
Letter 2 : DJ (Bobby deol) to his brother AJ (sunny deol)
Letter 3 : Sahil (Dino) to his parents (Mitun )

The story evolves around the sentiments and patiriosm of these shaheed soldiers and thier family.  While shooting (documentary film) SAAND and NAWAAB realiase how much ‘GARV’ is involved in being an Indian and contributing to your country in some means.

Except for Salman’s story the rest two were bakwaas and with full of faulty scripts. The director & producer could have chosen better actors rather than these big names. The movie could have been made far better having such a decent script and theme in it.

The zeros :

  • All songs except for ‘Mannata‘ should have been striped out of the movie to make the script sensible and better. Also it would have cut down the movie by 20 odd mins.
  • Sunny deol might be Dharmendar’s son but how can guy fight with 15-20 gudas when he has lost his legs in air force jet crash and needs the support of the wheel chair.
  • Amrita arora and riya sen were not at all need for the movie .. they were there to just add some spice in the movie, which they failed to do so.
  • Salman khan eyes should always be covered by goggles .. as he looks drunked all time ..

I go with 2 out of 5 as rating for it. Watch it only if you could bear a few ill-logical things and have no other option over the weekend.
